I Don't Care Any More

I was recently introduced to 'Blubster', a peer-to-peer file sharing thing for music.

Probably of highly dubious legality, although I've heard conflicting advice on the 'net. It comes with oodles of spyware and pop-ups, so, if you're interested in installing it, be very careful. It downloads and installs itself, and by all accounts is a bugger to un-install, so be absolutely sure you want this thing on your home PC. I have it on an old laptop.

For my taste, there's not much there of interest, as it depends absolutely on the taste of the other users.

On the back of my subscription to Wippit for the All Day Breakfast Show, I've been looking through the database. There's not an awful lot there I'm interested in, to be honest, and I have to say that the download process is one of the least user-friendly and most confusing and time-consuming one I have ever come across. It's taken me the best part of 2 workig days to download about 150 tracks on the toppest speed connection possible.

How Paul Wippit ever became an internet millionare on the back of this is completely beyond me.

Heart of Glass

An 'interesting' morning.

I was asked by a couple of schoolgirls if I would buy something from a shop for them. When I asked what, they said 'cigarettes'. I said an over-effusive 'No No', sounding a bit like I was talking to a 4 year old.

Then, I arrived at the Tube to be confronted with a 'Suspended' notice - Police investigation which had closed the line down. The bus replacement service is terribly slow, but I had no option. Then a mother from my son's nursery turned up and started flirting with me in the bus queue, which was nice. It would have been nicer if she hadn't been 6 months pregnant...

The travel chaos left me with plenty of time for music:

Had Too Much to Dream Last Night

A rather messy Tube this morning, with a train breaking down in front of us. Frankly, though it makes no difference whether I get to work at 9 or 10 these days...

I found some MP3 files by 'The Enid' yesterday, which was really a blast from the past. I've got several albums on vinyl (In The Region of Summer Stars, Touch Me, Salome, Something Wicked..., Aerie Faerie Nonsense, The Spell), but no CDs. Well, I found several MP3 fragments here, on their website. Great fun, but frustratingly brief snippets.

I saw The Enid back at Uni, in 1990 or thereabouts. Absolutely superb, with just Robert John Godfrey and Stephen Stewart (there may have been a drummer, but I think they were using backing tracks). Some bits just took my breath away...

"Even if you think you don’t know Robert Fripp’s music, you do. That unearthly guitar sound that swoops and soars through Bowie’s Heroes – that’s Fripp, played through Brian Eno’s sonic treatments. Fripp and Eno developed this “You play, I’ll tweak” system, which they called Frippertronics. More recently, Fripp has evolved the idea alone. These days, he calls the results Soundscapes. Churchscapes are Soundscapes performances in churches. There, that’s the terminology sorted. Hell Is Other People

I had a day off yesterday, so was feeling really relaxed. Until the Tube threw one of its 'special services' at me.

Several things should have lifted my mood:

I saw the Simpsons Movie at the weekend - good, but not great. There's the Matt Groening interview with Danny Baker here in MP3 format, but I haven't listened to it yet.

I've also found this forum on 'Cook'd and Bomb'd' discussing the ADBS. I agree with much what is being written about the subscription and Wippit in general.

The third pleasant surprise was the return of the free (for now) ADBS. This will be the last week before going to £2 a week. I think I'll give it a go before I go on holiday. It will have to be at least three things, though - every day, funny, and at least an hour long - if I'm going to stick with it.

I Don't Want to Talk About It

A feeble attempt at a mass transport system this morning. I'd just settled down on an almost empty carriage with newspaper and iPod, when the train driver announced that the train would be terminating at the next station due to signal failure. What are these things made of - string?

30 minutes late for work. I did, however spend the entire Northern Line surrounded by freshly-scrubbed and fragrant young ladies and spent most of my time facing an attractive slim girl with long blond hair, so it wasn't all bad.

This morning's 'All Day Breakfast Show' featured Peter Serafinowicz (Look Around You, Black Books, etc), which was just as well, as the Northern Line put on a special service this morning.

No service South of Archway. No, sorry, no service South of Finchley Central. Oh, hang on, it might be starting again in a while. Ahh, no, suspended Southbound. For a bit longer. How long, you say? Five minutes? The next train should be going through... Oh no, sorry, it stops here. The next one will run all the way. Oh, hang on. Etc etc.

I arrived at work 1 hour late. It's a good thing I've got nothing to do.

To cheer myself, I continued listening to the latest 'All Day Breakfast Show' with Danny Baker and Amy Lame'. Very funny. I think I'd like 'Oxygene' for my album to remind me of a chaotic Geography school field trip to Northern France back in the 80s.
